What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
My name is Jonas Schenzel, and my journey in education began in 2012. After graduating with my Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies, I was inspired to further my career and education and obtained a Master’s Degree in Special Education in 2015. Working as a Special Education Teacher brought me great joy in helping others and making lasting impacts in the lives of our youth, and that’s where I remained until 2018. I decided to head back to school and earn another Master’s Degree in School Administration, graduating in Spring of 2020. I remained in Special Education for the next couple of years, and in 2023 I began working up the School Administration ladder as Special Education Director , instructional coach, Dean of Students and an assistant principal. The Montessori approach has always been something I have believed in and being the Assistant Principal at Alpine Academy College and Career I established close working relationships with the staff at High Desert Montessori in efforts to recruit students to transition from HDMS Middle School to Alpine Academy High School. In 2026 my wife and I made the decision to enroll our own children at HDMS and strongly believe in the Montessori approach of intrinsic learning and student centered learning environments.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
I believe in the HDMS charter because I firmly believe in the Montessori approach and principles. Not only is Montessori a personal choice for my children but its principles closely align with my educational philosophies. Understanding the needs of children and helping guide them through their own learning journey is an important aspect in fostering curiosity and helping develop good decision making and positive outcomes that relate to natural consequences and lasting impacts in life. Coming from a mostly Charter background I also believe that school choice plays a crucial role in guiding diverse learners through their educational journey. I am beyond thrilled to become a member of the HDMS community.
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
I earned my Bachelor’s of Education in Elementary Education from the University of Phoenix in 2010. I attended the Montessori Teacher Training Collaborative, receiving my AMS Elementary Teacher certification in 2017. I received my Master’s in Montessori Education in 2019 from Xavier University, and my Master’s in Educational Leadership from Western Governors University in 2021. I was also part of the Emerging Leaders Fellowship of the American Montessori Society in 2019.
While I was completing my Bachelor’s of Education, my son, Cole, was struggling in his traditional school environment, resulting in being withdrawn and enrolled in an online school for 5th and 6th grade. Half way through 6th grade, Cole was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.With me looking for a teaching job, being at home online was no longer an option for him. The middle school he was zoned for was not a good fit for him, so my husband and I went looking for alternatives. HDMS was the perfect fit not only for Cole, but for my daughter Eden as well. Both of my children were accepted for the school year 2014/15. A week after, I was notified that my children were accepted, and a teaching position at HDMS was posted. I thought it would be neat to teach at the same school as my children.
Little did I know that I would fall in love with the Montessori philosophy and approach to education.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
The Montessori approach to education should be available to all children regardless of background. HDMS allows all children to benefit from a Montessori education.
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
I have an Associates Degree in Business from Santa Barbara College. I spent over twenty years as a senior account executive in the communications industry. My husband is in the education field and we always shared the dream of one day being on similar break/vacation schedules. After our boys left the house, I decided to make a career change. A family friend worked at HDMS at the time and told me about what a fantastic school and work environment it was. After several years of working here, I can honestly say that I wholeheartedly agree with her assessment. HDMS is a wonderful school and I love coming to work each and every day.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
I am so happy to be a part of the HDMS community. I’ve already told my own children that when they have my future grandchildren, they will be attending HDMS! I love this school with all my heart.
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
I attended Southern Utah University where I obtained a BA in Secondary Education & German. Over the years, I worked as an Administrative Assistant at a large Software Corporation and at a Law Office. I also ran my own business during the years that I had small children at home. We found High Desert Montessori School when my oldest daughter was in second grade. I immediately knew that I wanted to be a part of the school and applied when a position came open. Many years later, I still love my job and I still love this school. I have the added bonus of being one of the Archery Coaches at HDMS, which allows me to interact with many of our incredible students on a regular basis!
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
Our family started our journey in public school. Although the teachers were devoted, it became clear quickly that a “one size fits all” approach was not going to work for our family. Our children were bored and were beginning to hate school at very young ages. After much research, we found Montessori. We were drawn to the idea of independent children learning at their own speed. We were drawn to the idea of a methodology that kindled a love of learning and exploration. Many years later, we have three children who love learning, who are independent and brave, who are self directed, children who are kind and who love their community. I am forever grateful we found Montessori.
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
After I graduated college I started working with kids as a Behavior Modification Tutor and continued to work with kids of all ages as a Developmental Specialist and a Teacher up until I had my own children. Working with kids is very rewarding and I enjoy seeing all of our students thrive at High Desert Montessori. From the moment he was born we knew we wanted a non-traditional school setting for my son. I did my research and found High Desert Montessori. By the time our son was two he was on the waiting list. Our son started at High Desert in 2015. Our daughter started in the primary program in 2017. I started working in the infant toddler room that same year and have been here ever since.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
The Montessori philosophy is simply amazing. Here at High Desert we see the whole child and provide an education that meets all of our kids individual needs. The students get to explore, create, and have a hands on educational experience that is incredible to see on a daily basis.
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
I have nearly 20 years experience working with children from birth to adolescence, three years of which were with special needs students. I was introduced to HDMS by Sherrie Jordan. My daughter, Paige is also an assistant at HDMS.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
This is my first experience in a Montessori setting and boy am I impressed with the level of independence and self guided work. Honestly, I wish I had experienced this environment earlier. It is wonderful that this Montessori program is available to so many families.
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
My journey to HDMS started when I took a position working as an outdoor education instructor in Colorado. Being in outdoor education, opened my eyes to a world of different teaching methods and the power of learning through experience. I worked at various camps from Colorado to North Carolina, and finally landed in Reno, where HDMS was the perfect fit.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
I believe in Montessori because I have seen first hand how beneficial this style of education is. It creates such a positive environment for learning and discovery, empowering children to follow their curiosity.
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
I started teaching middle school Mathematics in 2003 at Indianhead International school in South Korea. I then moved to Nevada, where I completed my degree in Secondary Education for Mathematics. I have worked as a mathematics teacher in both public middle school and highschool general education. I have taught mathematics using and transcribing mathematical notation into the Braille Nemeth code for students in need. Before joining the HDMS middle school team, I was a math teacher for the Washoe County School District GATE program. I took two years off from teaching before returning to the classroom last winter when our students needed someone to stand by them through a difficult time. Our HDMS students have since convinced me to stay.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
I am new to the Montessori educational methods and philosophy. I did not seek out HDMS because I wanted to become a Montessori mathematics teacher. I stepped back into the classroom last winter for our HDMS students. Since then, our students have taught me that their needs for success as both growing mathematicians and young humans is in line with the needs of my past gifted and talented students from the GATE program. Both Montessori and GATE succeed through open and dynamic classrooms built around trust and community where students have the freedoms and responsibilities that will guide their development as both young adults and mathematicians. Lectures are short, opportunities for classroom practice are plentiful, small group lessons are used to reinforce understanding when it is needed, and the classroom chairs and desks are meant to be moved around to allow students to learn by struggling through challenging work with their friends and trusted peers. Math is best learned when we are having fun as a team of learners.

What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
I grew up in South Lake Tahoe and earned my associate’s in Spanish (business minor) at LTCC, then a BA and MA in Spanish and World Languages from UNR. In 2017, I moved to Cartagena, Colombia to immerse myself in language and culture. There, I taught English in classrooms big and small, pursued translation and interpretation studies with a focus on cognitive science, and co-founded a cultural and language exchange project. Later, my husband and I joined an educational retreat center in the Andes, leading programs in wellness, movement, and intercultural learning.
Throughout that time, I continued teaching Spanish online for LTCC and led cultural language classes at the Intensive Spanish Summer Institute (ISSI). In 2024, I completed a 500-hour yoga teacher training, and in 2025, I earned an MA in Teaching from UNLV.
A friend introduced me to High Desert Montessori, and from the first glance I felt aligned with its mission. I’m excited to bring my bilingual storytelling background, social-emotional focus, and passion for inquiry to the third floor as part of a school rooted in curiosity and respect.

What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
One of the most remarkable moments of my life was the summer when I was helping with the construction of our family cabin in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Tuolumne County, California. My mother brought me a letter sent from the University of California at Berkeley that stated I was accepted to attend the University that Fall. That was an awesome letter! Once I completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Zoology at Berkeley, I moved to Newport Beach to attend University of California at Irvine graduate school to study Secondary Science Education. One benefit of living in Newport Beach was that I was able to go surfing every morning during the summer and work nights at Disneyland. I have been teaching high school and middle school science off and on since then.
Because of my enthusiasm for the outdoors, I moved to Wyoming where I completed a Master’s degree in Animal Science at the University of Wyoming, worked on a buffalo ranch outside of Laramie, and chaired the science department at Cheyenne East High School. Oh yes, I also did a lot of fly fishing. Because of my love for science and research, I moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan where I completed a doctorate in Biological Chemistry at the University of Michigan followed by six years of postdoctoral training in neuroscience and stem cell biology. After all of that, I was back in the classroom teaching high school and middle school science.
It has been a pleasure to move to Reno to be close to my family and teach science at local charter schools, including High Desert Montessori School.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
It is clear that High Desert Montessori School shares a commitment to child-centered developmental education—and the life-changing transformations that result from that commitment. Care of self, care of others, and care of the environment is a big part of their education. I look forward to providing opportunities to explore choice and unique learning opportunities for our adolescent learners in the area of science and environmental education. I will be working closely with the team at HDMS and Washoe County School District to deliver the best possible Montessori school experience for our students.

I believe in HDMS because of the community built here. I stayed for 5 years because of the caring staff, warm environment, and the Montessori philosophy that became life changing for me. I’ve never had a better work environment and a greater joy than coming back to HDMS year after year!
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
Teaching is my calling, I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. I graduated from a College in México with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education; specifically in Spanish working for Middle Schools. After that, I enrolled in another University to learn English. Being bilingual gave me the opportunity to work with almost all ages students. For almost eight years I worked as a Grammar, Latín and English teacher at a High School.
I moved to Sparks and started working as an Interpreter for the WCSD, helping families and teachers. Becoming a mom took me to another chapter in my life, and I worked four years at a Daycare.
During my career, I learned about teaching theories and methods and certainly Montessori was the one that stood out for me. I heard there was a Montessori school and I wanted my daughter and myself to be part of this community. When the position for Teacher Assistant became available I applied and took this opportunity.

I truly believe the Montessori method provides all children with a hands on learning environment and the motivation needed for them to feel inspired and always thrive for the best.
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
I have a Bachelors in Studio Art, a Masters in Elementary Education and a Masters in Education Leadership. After five years as a middle school math teacher, I wanted to make the change to elementary school. I went to Montessori and resonate with the education style. It brings together my passions for art, languages, and movement.

I believe that High Desert Montessori gives learners an alternative method to learning. Teachers are trained in the ideal ways students learn but HDMS implements them.

What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
After working at Mountain View Montessori for three years, I fell in love with the Montessori teaching philosophy and decided to go back to school to get my teaching degree. I received my Associate of Arts from Feather River College in Quincy, my Bachelor of Arts, with a focus on English, from Sierra Nevada College in Incline, and my Master of Education, with a focus on curriculum and instruction, from the University of Nevada, Reno. After receiving my teaching degree and working at High Desert Montessori School for a year and a half, I went to the AMI Orientation to Adolescent Studies in Huntsburg, Ohio.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
Our school is a hidden gem within our community. Having a charter school to offer a Montessori education to all students, no matter their socioeconomic status, is amazing! Our diverse environment offers a solid education that focuses on the entire child, the community, and the earth and all of its inhabitants.
The beauty of the Montessori classroom is that all children are seen as individuals. All students are given the opportunity to grow, no matter where they are academically. The diverse curriculum offered throughout our school helps students find their interests and passions, which are naturally connected to the mandated state standards.

I went to college to pursue a degree in Secondary Education in History and knew from an early age that I was really passionate to be in a classroom.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
As far as the Montessori method, I’ve gotten the pleasure of seeing it in action, in so many age groups- I get to learn so many new things every day!
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
My High Desert Montessori experience started as a parent. Both of my sons attended HDMS. My oldest started in Kindergarten and my youngest was 3 years old. I was working as a teacher’s assistant for WCSD then but was so taken with the community here that I approached one of my children’s assistants and told her to keep me in mind if there were any openings. It wasn’t long after that I was invited for an interview. I became an assistant in the Excelsior classroom. I was an assistant in Excelsior for 3 1/2 years before I completed my teacher licensure and became a lower elementary teacher. I have since become fully Montessori-trained in Elementary Education and have switched to teaching upper elementary in the Sierra classroom.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
Before becoming an assistant at HDMS, I had no desire to become a teacher. It didn’t take long for me to realize that the Montessori methodology was inspiring, this was the WAY to teach. I began my licensure program after my first year as a teacher. If Montessori’s methods could inspire me as an adult, her methods are exactly what children need to be excited to become lifelong learners. The children at HDMS are surrounded by adults who truly want to help them become the best versions of themselves every step of the way.
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
I have worked with kids for 12 years in a child care setting after having my first son. When he was going to start kindergarten I was so nervous because I had been his teacher for 5 years and wanted to find something that would set him up for an amazing future. I found HDMS online and scheduled an observation and fell in love. I was blown away with how well 3 and 4 year olds behaved and worked all by themselves, especially coming from a daycare. The atmosphere was so different and I knew that is where I wanted my son to be. After 4 years of my son being enrolled I got an opportunity to work there and jumped at it.

I believe in our school because I see everyday how dedicated not only the teachers and assistants are but also the administration and parents. We are a community at our school and work as a team to shape the future of the children there. I am proud and so grateful to be a part of HDMS and when my youngest is 3 we will all be there.
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
I started teaching at HDMS in 2014 and earned my Montessori Teaching Certificate in 2016. I received my bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Russian from UC Davis and a teaching certificate from Sierra Nevada College. I began my teaching career in 2008 in a small, rural school in Markleeville, California where I taught first and second grades. Prior to teaching, I worked with at-risk youth in South Lake Tahoe in a wilderness therapy group home and started a youth street outreach program.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
Teaching in public schools is my calling, and until I moved to Reno, I did not know public Montessori schools were an option. During my teaching credential program at Sierra Nevada College, we studied many famous education philosophers. Maria Montessori’s work always stood out to me as the most well-founded and effective method for children to learn. When I discovered that HDMS offered a tuition-free Montessori education to a wide range of students, I knew it was the school for me.
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
I was a previous Montessori Alum, and after being a manager for a while during the beginning of college I eventually started my private studio teaching Violin, Viola and Cello. I’m nearly finished with my dual major with UNR for Applied Music with a focus on classical violin performance, as well as graphic design with a focus on animation. I plan on getting a masters in education, as I completely fell in love with teaching.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
My belief with Montessori is that it is incredibly vital and special to see the child as a whole individual, not just as an unknowing observer. Children are tactile and thoughtful, and deserve to be seen, to have their emotions and values cared for and advocated for. They learn better when they feel and know that we see them as people, not just as participants, which was my big issue with many public schools. School should be fun and safe as well as genuinely engaging and useful, and I see that happening here at Montessori.

I came to work at HDMS because I went there from kindergarten to eight grade. This is my first job and I don’t think I could have picked a better one.

I believe in public Montessori charter schools because I was at HDMS for so long I think it really prepared me for high school and set me up amazingly for the rest of my life.
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
My experience with training and experience has all come from my seasonal job at Mount Rose. I am a snowboarding instructor there and I love what I do! I was a former student at HDMS for 8 years and decided why not go back and work with the teachers I grew up with. This school is amazing and has a wonderful environment.

I believe in HDMS because this school made me the person I am today and opens up so much opportunities for you in the future! And I really appreciate how Montessori has shaped my life.
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
I have been teaching in the traditional school setting for 15 years working with students from preschool to 4th grade. I love teaching and helping my students to learn and grow. While I have enjoyed teaching, my family and I have struggled. We been looking for a different approach to teaching and learning which led us to find our Montessori.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
I love the student led and developmental approach to Montessori. All of the hands on experiences make for a beneficial learning environment. In addition to these qualities, I really appreciate how the whole child is a focus.
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
I have many years of experience working with children. It has always been a passion of mine to work with children and help them grow, as they are the future. I believe we are their support and guidance and that their learning abilities are endless. When I was offered the position at HDMS, I was really happy to join the team.

I believe in HDMS because it provides the tools and opportunities for children to be independent and take pride in their work. Montessori helps children explore their surroundings and learn at their own pace. Children are very hands-on and practice new skills every day. This helps them with self-confidence and knowing what they’re capable of.
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
I have an AS in Wildlife Ecology from TMCC, and I will complete my Bachelors of Elementary Education through Western Governors University this fall.
Prior to moving into my teaching role, I was the assistant in the Virginia classroom for four years as well as being the supervisor of the Aftercare program.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
I believe children should have access to various environments throughout the day, be able to practice what they’re skilled at, and have a chance to learn new skills as well! I believe in fostering independent learning in children. I love seeing how capable they are and how surprised they sometimes are by their own progress!
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
I have 9 years of experience as a classroom assistant and I came to this school looking for an alternative way to educate students than bombarding them with academics.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
I am excited to be a part of the Montessori way of teaching that works on creating good, whole human beings and not just good test takers.
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
I have a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education, and over 20 years of experience teaching in many different educational settings. I hope to foster a lifelong love of learning and encourage my students to always stay curious.

Our family moved from Arizona in 2023. We were so thrilled with High Desert Montessori for our 3 children, that I decided to join the team too. We love the Montessori method, the smaller school environment, and the strong community feeling that High Desert Montessori brings.
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
As an undergraduate an Norteast Missouri State University, I studied Anthropology and Sociology. I was an administrative assistant for a local independent business for 15 years and a stay-at-home parent for nearly a decade prior to coming to HDMS. My son has been attending the school since kindergarten. When my daughter started kindergarten here last year, I was ready to become a member of our community as a staff member as well as a parent.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
When my son was ready for kindergarten, I was absolutely thrilled when I discovered a free public charter Montessori school in my neighborhood. Over the years, my familiarity with the school as a parent deepened my appreciation for the idea of child led learning. The respect for children at our school and the compassion and independence I see in our students inspire and humble me.
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
I graduated from TMCC with an Associate of Arts in Education and then graduated from UNR with my Bachelor of Science in Education. I began my teaching career before even going to college, I used to serve in different community spaces as a volunteer/mentor to middle and high schoolers. During my time at UNR I worked in WCSD as a substitute teacher, after UNR I enjoyed my time as a preschool teacher. I had my son in 2019 and a daughter in 2021, at which point my career was on pause. I’m excited to get back into teaching this fall and am so looking forward to my career beginning and growing here at HDMS.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
All I can think to say here is that the “proof is in the pudding.” I recently enrolled my son into HDMS and the way in which my little boy has grown and developed and matured in just even a few short months at HDMS was reason enough for me to want to become more connected to the community. I saw his smile at the end of school and how much care, attention, individuality, and encouragement is placed into my kids learning and being successful; I knew this was the kind of teaching I wanted to be a part of. The kind of teaching that believes a student holds all their potential and we just need to unlock it. The kind of teaching that has compassion and empathy for students who may not fit into the normal “boxes.” A kind of teaching that develops critical independent thinkers and problem solvers. Might bite myself with that one since my 5yo already knows too much (Just kidding). The biggest thing that made my heart light up about Montessori is how every student is able to find THEIR own goals, purposes, and belonging in the school community, I believe having a sense of belonging and accomplishment at school is vital to success and HDMS has given myself and my kids so much room to grow here and I am grateful.

My younger cousin attends HDMS and I became curious about the Montessori Method from watching her experience. I have always worked with children.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
I believe in our Montessori school because it gives kids an opportunity to learn in a different more focused on them way. It provides support while encouraging them to be independent while also being able to find comfort within their class. This makes me happy and has me truly believing in this way of teaching.
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
I came to Reno and High Desert Montessori School in 2007. I joyfully took a teacher position in the middle school program after searching for a school that would provide me flexibility in teaching practices. HDMS was a great place for me and my two boys, who had just come from a charter school in Las Vegas that allowed them to guide their instruction, explore the real world, and be with multi-age groups.
After receiving my Bachelor of Science in 1998 from University of Nevada Las Vegas, I taught K-2 students in various public schools and at a K-8 multi-age, project-based charter school. In 2005, I received my Master’s Degree and in 2008 started my Montessori training.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
Coming to HDMS allowed me to remain in the public school setting, which provides education to a diverse population. Being in a charter school, provided a unique learning experience to families from all over the valley. The diversity of our school has connected me with people from many different places in the world, students of various abilities, and the opportunity to share the Montessori philosophy and materials.
What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
I have my Masters Degree in Literacy Studies from University of Nevada, Reno. I have over 13 years of experience in education and about 11 of them have been in grades K-2. I am LETRS trained, GLAD trained and I am a lifelong learner. I heard about Montessori through researching and friends and family. I wanted a different way of schooling for my kids. I am happy to know there are schools out there that foster the creativity and autonomy of children.

What is your experience and training and how did you come to our school?
I have worked in education in several different capacities. I did my student teaching in Japantown of SanFrancisco. I was lead teacher at an afterschool program for the Jewish community center of San Francisco while working on my undergrad at SFSU. I was selected for the Oakland Teaching Fellows after I began my work in teaching Special Education in East Oakland at Life Academy. I am duel certified in both special education and elementary education and that I am both upper and lower Montessori Certified through AMS. I remember hearing about Maria Montessori in my Education classes but her work was presented as something to inform a traditional pedagogy. When looking into daycare programs for my oldest child, I quickly got on a list at HDMS for the infant toddler program. I observed, I asked questions, I was extremely persistent and eventually had my daughter enrolled in the primary program. When my youngest was born, I took a hiatus from teaching special education/resource for WUSD and applied for an opening. I believe in equality of education for all students. When I look at the Montessori pedagogy I see that it truly meets the needs of all students, where they are on their path, and is non-judgmental of the style or speed of learning.

I’ve always enjoyed being around education. I’m a mom of two and they are my life. My son attends the HDMS Primary Program and our family really likes it. It’s amazing place and so are the people who work there. The peaceful atmosphere and kind teachers made think that it would be nice place to work.

I love the Montessori way for kids to learn. It’s so unique and nice, without pressure. It keeps kids attention and interest, and they always have fun learning new things.

I was born in Guatemala and moved to the United States at the age of 12. Reno has always been my home away from home.
I knew early in life I wanted to work with children, and when I started seeking childcare for my eldest daughter, I fell in love with Maria Montessori’s work.
I have been a primary teacher in the Beowawe classroom for the last 12 years and before that I was an assistant for three years. I am committed to this method/philosophy because of the profound respect Dr. Montessori had for children and their developmental stages. I graduated from the Montessori Institute of San Diego in 2009 with an AMI diploma (ages 2-6).
In addition to teaching, I find it rewarding to serve as an interpreter and translator for our Hispanic families. I provide parent education nights and offer my expertise as an advocate for their needs and rights.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
Our school is able to successfully serve approximately 425 students and their families. We believe that all children should have access to a Montessori education regardless of their socioeconomic, racial or cultural background. I feel grateful to be part of the HDMS community.

I love working in education and have worked at a number of schools here in Reno and the Bay area. I absolutely love HDMS.

After raising 3 boys and being a part of my 7 grandchildren’s education I see how important quality education and school choice is. The way a Montessori classroom runs is so unique and beautiful.

I graduated in 2014 with a degree in Early Childhood Education. I started working at HDMS in the Fall of 2014. My son, Elliott, had been attending HDMS since 2013. Montessori was a teaching style I had learned about while going to school for my degree. I loved that I could work at the same school as my son.

I believe in HDMS because it is very accepting of all families. I believe in HDMS because I have seen how this learning style can greatly affect children to be independent, life long learners.

My name is Lisa Kapellas and I am a primary teacher in the Toquima Classroom. I have a BA in Anthropology from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a MEd in Early Childhood Special Education from UNR. I have completed both the Primary and Lower Elementary Montessori training programs at the Montessori Education Center of the Rockies through the American Montessori Society (AMS).

Throughout my time working in Montessori schools, I have worked as an administrative assistant, a classroom assistant and a lead teacher in the Front Range of Colorado and the Bay Area. When I moved to Truckee, I was aware there were no Montessori schools and looked toward Reno. I happily found HDMS which was not only a Montessori school but also, a public charter.

I have a Bachelors of Science degree in Elementary Education and am certified in early childhood education as well. I have been in the education field for over 30 years and during that time I have been a TA, Interventionist, Outdoor Education Instructor, Pre-k teacher and most recently 6 years of teaching kindergarten. I have a background in fine art and enjoy being able to share my love of art with my students. My experience with children has always been child centered and learning through exploration, that’s what attracted me to HDMS.

I believe in HDMS because providing a safe and supportive and loving environment enables children to grow on all levels.

I received a Bachelors in Elementary Education. I came to High Desert Montessori because when I was doing my observations for my 203 education class. I was really happy because just by observing that classroom I saw how wonderful the school is.

I believe in our public charter Montessori school because I see the happiness in the children’s face. I’m not in a classroom but the few times that I have been put in one even if it’s for an hour I see how engaged the students are to learn. The learning methods that are used are very different than with public education and coming from one, if I would have had the chance to ask my parents if they could put me in a Montessori school, I would have. I also saw how my younger sister was being taught in elementary and she struggled a lot to understand things, especially with Math. I had the opportunity to see a teaching method used for math, and it made it seem so simple. I like how the children have choices on what work they would like to do and how hands on the teaching methods are.

I have a B.A. in environmental science and ecology and a Master’s degree in education. I earned my Montessori primary diploma from Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) in 2012. I came to High Desert looking for an individualized and whole child approach to education for my two daughters. I have been a part of the High Desert Montessori community for over 10 years now.

I love working with children; each day is different and new. I enjoy seeing each child reach his or her true potential through the Montessori curriculum in a public charter school setting. I believe all children should have access to a Montessori education regardless of their background.

My experience and training with kiddos began with my first job in high school with the City of Sparks. This lead me to pursue to a Bachelor Degree in Human Development and Family Studies. I’ve worked with children between the ages of birth to 17 in many capacities. My favorite being my job onboard different cruise lines!
I also ran an infant/toddler home daycare.

After becoming a parent I realized even more so how important education is and wanted the best all around place for my kiddo to attend. We enjoy the philosophy and intent behind Montessori and feel lucky to be a part of the HDMS community.

I started as a student at HDMS in eighth grade, so while I was only there for one year I really grew to love and appreciate the community. I love working with kids and having fun with them through all the ups and downs, so I can’t wait to grow to know these students throughout the upcoming year.

I think our public charter Montessori school really fosters such a unique and beneficial learning environment, and I can’t wait to become part of that.

I am coming back to hdms as an alumni, It was part of my life for 10 years kindergarten through 8th grade. Though I guess it never really left because I came back and volunteered as an assistant in the archery program that I was able to shoot in growing up. So far I’ve had great opportunities volunteering with different institutions and age ranges of kids. I’m so incredibly grateful to be back at the place that helped raise me, and be able to spend time impacting the community that shaped me.

My name is Liz Kelley and I am your School Counselor. I have had twenty years’ experience as a school counselor in the WCSD school system. I worked at Greenbrae Elementary for twelve years as a general education counselor and eight years as an SIP (Social Intervention Program) counselor. These two positions were entirely different, and I learned a great deal from both of them.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
I came to Montessori because I wanted a change from being in the public school system. I look forward to learning all about Montessori and being part of the team. I have an open-door policy for all teachers, students and families, so please stop by and say hello.

I am a 4th generation Reno native who graduated from UNR with a degree in Elementary and Special Education in 2014. I worked as a Special Education Resource Teacher at Clayton Middle School, and have worked as a substitute teacher periodically for a total of 8 years. I also have a degree from America’s Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College. I have worked with exotic birds Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, and raised a guide dog puppy for Guide Dogs for the Blind. I have combined my love of wildlife and teaching by working with an animal rescue and educational outreach organization called Conservation Ambassadors, Wild Things Inc. During the summertime, I give wildlife presentations for children and their parents with animals ranging from Great Horned Owls to Brown Lemurs to American Alligators.

I fell in love with the Montessori methodology when I was raising my own toddlers. I found High Desert Montessori School and started substituting a few days per month and loved the program. I love to watch the children take control of their own learning and practice a work to mastery. I’m excited to be a part of a school that fosters a love of nature as well as a love of learning.

I have my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology from the University of Nevada, Reno. I have worked for the Washoe County School District in that role Fall of 2012 to the Spring of 2023. I have worked with pre-k through 8th grade students in that time. I have worked with a variety of kiddos with a range of speech and language challenges as well as those with more complex struggles. I have been a parent in this community for several years and am overjoyed to be able to bring my student centered approach to the students here. I look forward to supporting students in the Montessori community with their communication.
Why do you believe in our public charter Montessori school?
I believe that the purpose of school-based Speech and Language support is to help kiddos achieve what they want to as a human and not solely as an academic being. I believe that kiddos and their families are able to identify their priorities for improving communication. I love that Montessori supports the child as a whole and believes in their ability to express age-appropriate autonomy. Our public charter Montessori school allows a more diverse range of families to be able to participate and benefit.
